WHY DOES IVY TECH OFFER GLOBAL STUDIES?
Because Indiana employers asked for it! In today's labor market, it is almost impossible to be unaffected by the global forces influencing our economy. Many U.S. businesses are expanding their operations into different areas of the world, so even if you plan to remain in Indiana, you are very likely to interact with people from other countries and cultures on the job.
There are more than 1,050 Indiana businesses with Foreign Direct Investment from 37 different countries. Employers want to know that you have the skills to thrive in this diverse global community.
- 193,000 Indiana jobs are already supported by multinational corporations
- Indiana is home to the highest percentage of private sector jobs from foreign-owned firms in the Midwest
- Between 2013-2018, foreign-owned companies announced plans to invest $11 billion in Indiana and create 27,600 new jobs
- A study of more than 2,100 U.S. employers found that 93% highly valued employees who "are able to work effectively with customers, clients, and businesses from a range of different countries and cultures."

Our Global Studies certificates will teach you about thriving in a global workforce and how to succeed in a diverse society, making you more marketable in finding a job. It shows future employers that you have the ability to think critically and globally. A Global certificate on your resume lets them know that you're prepared to thrive in and serve your global community.
TWO GLOBAL CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE
Ivy Tech offers two unique certificates in the area of Global Studies:
Global Studies Certificate
Enhance your Ivy Tech associate degree by earning a Global Studies Certificate along with it. To earn this certificate, students take courses designated as having global content—many of which you may already be taking—and complete other globally-focused activities such as developing a global resume, participating in global immersion experiences, and completing a capstone experience.
Global Workforce Skills Certificate
The Global Workforce Skills Certificate is a short-term certificate credential (known as a certificate) available within Ivy Tech's Business Administration academic program. The certificate can be earned as part of your Business Administration associate degree, as part of a General Studies associate degree, or as a stand-alone certificate. It can also be earned by itself or as a companion to any other associate degree from an Ivy Tech academic program. Students earn this certificate solely by completing coursework from a specific set of globally-oriented courses; no additional activities are needed.

Global Studies Certificate

Enhance your Ivy Tech associate degree by earning a Global Studies Certificate along with it!
To earn the Global Studies Certificate, students take courses that have been specially created to include global content and learn about different cultures through experiences such as studying abroad or taking part in international activities on campus. The certificate values community involvement, professional and academic activities, and travel. Students develop a portfolio to explore and document their experiences.

The Global Studies Certificate requires students to take designated global studies courses and have global experiences in five areas:
(1) Global Studies Orientation & Application
- Attend a Global Studies Orientation session introducing the benefits, opportunities, expectations, and requirements of the Global Studies Certificate.
- Submit the global studies application to your local Global Studies Advisor.

(2) Global Studies Course Electives
- 15 credits must be successfully completed from designated global studies courses across a minimum of three disciplines (see course list). Many of the course options may already be part of your academic plan.
- Transfer courses must demonstrate appropriate global content via syllabus, global component, or objectives.
(3) Global Immersion
Participation in global, cultural, or diversity-related activities outside the regular classroom experience. Select four of the following six activity categories (documentation must be provided):
- Completion of the U.S. Institute of Peace Certification online in one of the following areas:
- Conflict Analysis
- Negotiation
- Interfaith Conflict Resolution
- Complete a review and study guide on the book Cultural Intelligence: A Guide to working with People from Other Cultures, by Brooks Peterson. This textbook can be found online in the Ivy Tech Library (local campuses may select a different book).
- An international travel experience – some Ivy Tech trips are just $50 and include all meals, housing, transportation, and tours. Trip requirements must be pre-arranged with your Global Studies Advisor prior to departure.
- Attendance at a minimum of three conferences, lectures, or workshops related to other cultures or global issues—many are free right on campus
- Active membership in a professional group or community organization related to global issues
- Regionally-determined activity – determined by your local campus
(4) Global/International Resume
Completion of a resume and cover letter outlining global experiences and letters of reference. The focus is on including examples that show employers that you are excited to work with diverse colleagues and serve audiences and markets that have a different cultural background than your own, and that you are comfortable in new and unfamiliar environments. (5) Global Studies Capstone Experience
- Completion of an international project, research, competition, community service, service learning, or travel study experience which leads to a demonstration of competency and leadership in the field of global studies
- You're already completing projects like these in your required coursework—you’ll just want to pick a topic that connects to international, cultural, or global issues. This work may also be part of your job, internship, or community activities. You’re already doing the work—why not earn an extra academic certificate for it?

Global Studies Certificate Courses
Ivy Tech is excited to offer a wide variety of courses that incorporate global content. You only need 15 credits (4 or 5 classes) and a global learning portfolio to add the Global Studies Certificate to your degree. Dozens of core classes from 33 different academic areas count toward the certificate and some may already be part of your academic plan.

Global Workforce Skills Certificate
Short-Term Certificate | 21 Credit Hours
The Global Workforce Skills Certificate is a short-term certificate (known as a certificate) focused on building global workforce skills. Students will develop intercultural communication skills and learn how to thrive in a global workforce and succeed in a diverse society.
The certificate is available within Ivy Tech's School of Business, Logistics & Supply Chain Management in the Business Administration academic program. The certificate can be earned as part of your Business Administration associate degree or as a stand-alone certificate—either by itself or as a companion to an associate degree from any Ivy Tech academic program. Students earn this certificate solely by completing coursework from a specific set of globally-oriented courses
The Global Workforce Skills short-term certificate is approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) and is eligible for financial aid.

This 21-credit hour program draws on specific classes across a variety of academic programs. Many of the class options overlap with existing Ivy Tech degrees, which means it may be a marketable add-on for the degree you're already pursuing.
