TRIO Mission Statement

Trio LogoThe Federal TRIO Programs are federally funded programs that provide outreach and student services designed to ensure equal educational opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.  Collectively, TRIO programs provide services, such as academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other support to income-eligible families and potential first-generation students for educational access and retention.  Ivy Tech Community Colleges host three of TRIO’S college access and preparatory programs: Student Success Services, Talent Search, and Upward Bound. 

TRIO PROGRAMS

  • Program Description

    TRIO Upward Bound serves as an intensive intervention program that prepares 9th - 12th graders for higher education through various enrichment courses, instruction in literature, math, and science and provides mentoring and support.

    Available at our Indianapolis and Muncie campuses.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Be enrolled in the 9th or 10th grade in high school
    • Have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
    • Meet federal income guidelines and/or be a first-generation student
    • Demonstrate a need for academic support
    • Have a strong desire to attend college
    • Complete the Upward Bound application process

  • Program Description

    TRIO Talent Search assists middle and high school students to complete secondary education and enroll in post-secondary education. This early intervention program helps youth better understand their educational opportunities and options.

    The Talent Search Program is available at our Lake County campus.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
    • Be between the ages of 11 and 27.
    • Have completed 5th grade
    • Be attending an identified target school.
    • Meet federal income guidelines and/or be a first-generation student

    TRIO Student Support Services is an academic and personal development program to help identified students achieve academic and career goals by providing supportive experiences and wrap-around services.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Student’s parent(s) did not complete a bachelor's degree
    • Student meets TRIO low-income level requirements
    • Student has a documented disability
      • *Must meet at least one

    Additional Requirements

    • Student is a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
    • Student is certificate or degree seeking at Ivy Tech Community College
    • Student has an academic need for services

What Services do we Offer?

  • As a participant in TRiO Student Support Services a qualifying student will be eligible to receive:
  • Grant Aid (Financial Assistance)
  • Individualized Academic and Financial Advising
  • Career Assessment
  • Skill Building Workshops (Study Skills, Time Management, Note Taking etc…)
  • Transfer Assistance to Four Year Institutions
  • Participate in College Tours
  • Tutoring and Mentoring Services

Is there a cost associated with this Program?

The best way to reach the TRIO Student Support Services program staff is through our front office.
Staff members can relay messages and seek answers to student inquiries in the most effective way possible. What is TRIO Student Support Services?

TRIO Student Support Services offers services to 160 first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities as they pursue a college degree from Ivy Tech. Specifically, our goal is to provide individualized support to eligible students seeking to complete a degree or certificate from Ivy Tech. Admission to our program is not automatic; it is a privilege as we are limited in the number of students we can serve. Furthermore, you will be required to use certain services based upon our assessment of your needs.

TRIO activities are free and exclusive to participants. If you are a student who has been away from school for some time, a brand new students who feels unprepared for college, or a student who is wondering if you can success, TRIO Student Support Services might be the right place for you.

Who is eligible for TRIO Student Support Services?

The following criteria apply to ALL applicants:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or national or be eligible for federal student aid
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne and Kosciusko County (Warsaw) in addition to needing academic support to complete a college degree or certificate from Ivy Tech within a four-year timeframe.
  • Be willing to maintain a 2.0 GPA.

An applicant must be ANY of the following:

  • A first generation college student (neither parent completed a four-year bachelor's degree)
  • A low-income individual, according to federal guidelines (in general, this means eligibility for a Pell Grant)
  • An individual with a documented disability registered with Disability Support Services

TRIO SSS is 81% funded by the U.S. Department of Education ($275,105 annually) with 19% additional funding from Ivy Tech Community College Central Indiana. The program serves 160 students annually.
