What is a Grant?

Grants are funds given to the Foundation or College for specific, designated purposes, and usually include a contract for services, a specific time frame for completion, and reporting of results back to the funder. Some of these grants are given to the College (typically from local, state, and federal government agencies), while others are directed to the Foundation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (typically from education funders, nationwide foundations, community foundations, private and family foundations, and corporate foundations).

It is important when seeking financial aid that you file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is your key to financial aid such as grants and scholarships that do not have to be paid back. The FAFSA provides a FAFSA4caster tool to estimate your eligibility for federal student aid on their website. Grants are the best type of gift-aid, as they are awards that do not have to be paid back. Below is a list of top grants available at Ivy Tech Community College. To explore all grants and available financial aid opportunities at your local campus, contact your local financial aid office.

Grant Opportunities

The Pell Grant, the largest federal grant program, is designed to assist students from low-income households. A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid, except under certain circumstances.

Eligibility: Federal Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor's, graduate, or professional degree.
Confined or incarcerated students may be eligible for a Pell Grant, depending on location and planned academic program.

Application: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Description: Federal need-based grant. Award amounts are based on your enrollment for each semester.  You may be awarded the full-time amount originally. However, the actual amount posted to your account will reflect your actual enrollment for the semester.

Eligibility: Students with a -1500 SAI on their FAFSA and who meet all other federal aid eligibility requirements will be considered for this award. However, due to limited funds, not all students who meet these requirements will be awarded SEOG funds. The SEOG funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
