HAZWOPER Clean-up Site Worker (Initial)

This course is delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), with partial funding provided through the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences grant #ES06184.

OSHA's Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Standard (29 CFR 1910.120(b-o) and 1926.59(b-o)) requires specialized training for workers involved in:

  • Ordered cleanup operations
  • Contractor-led cleanup of hazardous substance releases
  • Post-emergency response cleanup involving OSHA-defined hazardous substances

"Hazardous substances" under OSHA include:

  • DOT hazardous materials
  • CERCLA hazardous substances
  • RCRA hazardous waste
  • Petroleum products with a flashpoint of 200 F or less
  • Disease-causing agents

This course provides four (4) CEUs for WWOG and DWOG licenses.

Participants receive comprehensive instruction and hands-on experience designed to meet the requirements for initial cleanup worker training under the HAZWOPER Standard.

As a result of this course, participants will demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Basics of hazardous materials and their classifications
  • Processes for handling known and unknown hazardous substances
  • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for hazardous waste site cleanup
  • Site control principles and the establishment of work zones
  • Decontamination procedures for personnel and equipment
  • Participants will gain hands-on practice with:
  • Monitoring equipment used to detect and measure chemical hazards
  • Selection, use, and limitations of PPE, including SCBA equipment
  • Safe drum handling techniques
  • Full decontamination procedures

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link. Your Program Manager will guide you through the best option for your specific training.
