Professional certifications
The Dental Assisting program is designed to prepare students for several industry certifications. While obtaining the certifications is not guaranteed by the program, Ivy Tech works hard to prepare our students to satisfy any requirements and pass any exams associated with the credentials below. In fact, in recent years 100% of our students have gotten at least one certification if not more.
Five workforce certificates – CPR, DANB Certified Dental Assistant, Coronal Polishing, Caries Prevention, Indiana Limited Dental Radiology License, and Nitrous Oxide Administration and Monitoring can be achieved based on the courses included in the curriculum for both the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and Long-Term Certificate (LTC) in Dental Assisting.
Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) – While pursuing an AAS or LTC in the Dental Assisting program, students are eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board Exam to become a recognized CDA.
Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) – Students enrolled in the Dental Assisting Associate of Applied Science program have the opportunity to earn this certificate of completion upon successful passing the Expanded Functions course.
Strong job growth
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 8% job growth for dental assistants from 2021-2031, which is faster than average. That equals approximately 56,400 new openings, on average, each year.
Associate Degree – Transferable or Career-Ready
Ivy Tech's Associate of Applied Science in Dental Assisting is a full-time, daytime program with limited admission. The program will prepare you for a career in dental assisting, but students can follow several routes upon achieving the degree:
Take all Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exams required to become a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) to begin working as a CDA
Add the CDA certification as a resume booster when seeking out additional dental-related degrees such as Ivy Tech's Dental Hygiene program
Transfer credits smoothly to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor's degree that will empower students to pursue a future in Sales or Health Science Education
Long-Term Certificate
known as a Technical Certificate (TC)
The Dental Assisting Technical Certificate (TC) is a great way to start your career quickly, and is ideal for students looking to take a step-by-step approach to starting in the industry.
After completing the TC, students regularly can follow several routes depending on what fits their goals and situation. Some can even be done simultaneously:
Get an entry-level job in dental assisting to start earning money right away
Get a head start on your Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential by sitting for any or all of the three Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exams that the TC prepares you for.
Take more courses at Ivy Tech to build on your TC and earn an associate degree.
Add the CDA certification to your application to become more competitive in Ivy Tech's Dental Hygiene program with selective admission.
Dental Assisting is part of Indiana’s Next Level Jobs degree program, funded by the Workforce Ready Grant. You may be eligible for a free Dental Assisting TC. You are eligible to be a part of Next Level Jobs at Ivy Tech if you fulfill all of the following requirements:
Are an Indiana resident

The Ivy Tech Dental Assisting program can be a challenging, yet rewarding, program. Before you apply, review the following requirements and expectations for students in the program.
Time Commitment
Both the Associate of Applied Science and Long-Term Certificate in Dental Assisting programs require a major commitment of time and energy. Courses are typically scheduled over 4-5 days per week. Students may also need to schedule additional general education courses as needed each semester. It is essential that you plan for the same amount of study time as class time per week. Dental Assisting course schedules and assignment due dates will not be adjusted to accommodate individual work schedules.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all class meetings, or other activities assigned as a part of a course of instruction. Attendance is necessary to maximize student-learning opportunities. Students who are absent are responsible for missed material. Clinical courses require that the student be present to effectively evaluate successful achievement of clinical course objectives and concepts, as clinical course objectives cannot be accomplished or evaluated outside the clinical setting. There are no make-up sessions for missed clinical hours; therefore, regular clinical attendance is mandatory for successful clinical course and program completion.
Eligibility for Licensure
During their time as a student in the Dental Assisting program, students will become eligible to apply for licensure in Radiology should they choose. Eligibility is tied to three National exams that are part of the program:
Infection Control (usually taken in the Fall Semester)
Radiology Exam (usually taken in the Spring Semester and students must apply to the Indiana State Department of Health for their limited Radiology License following the exam)
General Chairside exam (Usually taken in the Summer/last term)
There are fees associated with each of these exams, which are included in tuition. However, if a student does not pass an exam on their first try, they are responsible for paying an additional $270 to take each exam again.
While completing the Dental Assisting program prepares students for a career in this valued profession, they must apply for licensure before beginning their career. In order to apply, your degree must be conferred, which can take up to one month after graduation.
Dental Assisting Program Student Requirements
The following are required for participation in clinical activities:
Annual criminal background and sex offender registry screening
Annual drug screening
Physical examination and verification of essential functions
Annual flu vaccination

Annual TB skin testing or other documentation for positive tests per CDC guidelines
Documentation of current CPR Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from AHA or American Red Cross
Students interested in applying for admission to the Dental Assisting program should begin locating childhood immunization records early to ensure complete vaccination and physicals are submitted by established deadlines.
In addition to tuition, there are several equipment and exam costs that Dental Hygiene students will incur during the program. Each year, these fees are:
Background and drug test through CastleBranch: Approx. $99.00

Students will be required to provide their own transportation to and from clinical sites. Schedules vary based on campus. Please reach out to your campus of interest to learn more about meeting times and dates.
Hands-On Training
Ivy Tech training facilities offer an environment that mimics that of a true dental healthcare facility, so that students are prepared for their career.
Externship Experiences
An externship is a real-world experience where a student shadows a professional Dental Assistant on the job. Ivy Tech has established relationships with many organizations to help our students obtain an excellent externship and starting building their professional network while in school. In fact, many students are hired before their externship ends.
Service Learning
Dental Assisting Students have opportunities for service learning. You can think of service learning as volunteering within your future career path to give back to your community. These opportunities can strengthen your resume and may even be something you choose to continue doing once you have completed the program.
Examples of service learning include:
Oral health demonstrations at elementary school
Participating in a community health fair to promote dental health
Collaborate with the County Health Department or local dental clinics to put on community outreach events
Required Testing and Documentation
The Dental Assisting program at Ivy Tech has more specific admission criteria than Ivy Tech as a whole. Prospective students must:
Complete the Knowledge Assessment if they do not have previous college credit, ACT, SAT, or PSAT scores on file in the Registrar’s Office
Complete all required remedial courses (OXX) and any required co-requisites to those courses, prior to admission to the program.
Prerequisite Transfer Credit
Students seeking transfer credit for prerequisite courses completed at other colleges desiring must submit transcripts from other colleges to the Registrar Hub for evaluation. Submit external college transcripts at least one month prior to the application deadline to allow for adequate time for evaluation and processing so that prerequisite course grades can be counted for points toward admission.

Students can select up to 3 credential types and 3 campuses each on the application. Offers of acceptance are for a specific credential and a specific campus. The offers are determined through 8 rounds of autoselection and 6 rounds of manual selection.
If you are accepted, you will receive an email from the online application system to your Ivy Tech email account offering you a seat in the program you selected. Offers are emailed beginning within 1 week of the application close date and continue until program capacity is met or one week before the start of semester classes. Each round of offers begins at 6:00 am and applicants have until 11:59 pm the following day to either accept or reject an offer.
Depending on their rank and offers, a student could potentially receive multiple offers. Once you accept one offer, you are immediately withdrawn from all other offers and you will be contacted by the chair or dean of the program with information about the program orientation date, time, and location.
If a student fails to respond, then the offer expires. If a student rejects an offer three (3) times, the application is removed from the auto-selection application pool but will then be available for manual selection rounds that occur later in the process.
You do have the ability to withdraw your application at any point during the admission cycle. However, once you withdraw your application, you will not be able to apply again until the next application cycle.
What If I Don’t Get Admitted?
The Dental Assisting program does not maintain a waitlist. Non-admitted applicants can reapply in the next semester’s application cycle. You may also want to meet with your advisor. Advisors can assist students in exploring other programs of interest in Ivy Tech’s School of Health Sciences if they have applied several times and have not been accepted into the program. Ivy Tech offers many programs similar to Dental Assisting that lead to high-demand jobs that may be new to you, but fit your passion to help others.

Selective Admissions
Admission to the Dental Assisting program at Ivy Tech is highly competitive. The program has a selective admissions process, which means not all students who apply to the program will be accepted. Selective admission processes are needed because there are more people interested in taking courses in our program than there are seats available.
Weighted Point System
A weighted point system is used to evaluate applicants for admission. Student applications are assigned points on the following criteria: Grades, Pre-admission testing, and Certifications as applicable to the program. Applicants with the highest scores are accepted across 8 rounds of auto-selection within each application period. Point totals for applicants receiving admission offers will vary between campuses and application periods. Point totals are not shared.
Scoring includes:
General Education Course Points: 60 points possible. Points are awarded based on prerequisite course grades.
Tie Breaker: Student's overall Ivy Tech GPA
General Education Weighted Point System
When multiple course attempts are reported on applicant transcripts (including transcripts from other colleges and universities), the highest earned grade of the first three attempts will be used for the selection decision score through the application period. Points for courses transferred from other institutions will be awarded from the grade recorded on the transcript from the other institution provided transfer credit appears on the Ivy Tech transcript. Points for verified credit (V) or college credit awarded through High School Advanced Placement, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) International Baccalaureate (IB) and Dantes Subject Standardized Test (DSST), will be awarded as indicated below.

The Commission is scheduled to visit the Ivy Tech Community College Columbus Campus on April 25 – April 26, 2024. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments pertaining to the program. All comments, signed and unsigned, must be received in the Commission office no later than March 1, 2024. Signatures will be removed prior to the Commission forwarding the comments to the program. Comments must pertain only to the standards for Dental Assisting or policies and procedures used in the Commission’s accreditation process. Comments or questions should be addressed to the Commission:
Commission on Dental Accreditation 211 East Chicago Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 1/800-621-8099, extension 4653
WHO CAN SUBMIT COMMENTS: Third-party comments relative to the Commission’s accredited programs may include comments submitted by interested parties such as faculty, students, program administrators, dental-related organizations, and/or consumers.
TYPES OF COMMENTS CONSIDERED: All comments submitted must pertain only to the standards relative to the particular program being reviewed or policies and procedures used in the accreditation process. Comments will be screened by Commission staff for relevancy. For comments not relevant to these issues, the individual will be notified that the comment is not related to accreditation and, where appropriate, referred to the appropriate agency.
Ivy TechThe Commission currently publishes, in its accredited lists of programs, the year of the next site visit for each program it accredits. In addition, the Commission posts its spring and fall site visit announcements on the Site Visit Process and Schedule area of the Commission’s website for those programs being site visited in the current and next year. Special site visits and initial accreditation site visits for developing programs may be scheduled after the posting on the Commission’s website; thus, the specific dates of these site visits may not be available for publication. Parties interested in these specific dates (should they be established) are encouraged to contact the Commission office. The Commission will request written comments from interested parties on the CODA website.
The United States Department of Education (USDE) procedures require accrediting agencies to provide an opportunity for third-party comment, either in writing or at a public hearing (at the accrediting agencies’ discretion) with respect to institutions or programs scheduled for review. All comments must relate to accreditation standards for the discipline and required accreditation policies. In order to comply with the Department’s requirement on the use of third-party comment regarding program’s qualifications for accreditation or initial accreditation, the following procedures have been developed.
Those programs scheduled for regular review must solicit third-party comments through appropriate notification of communities of interest and the public such as faculty, students, program administrators, dental-related organizations, patients, and consumers at least ninety (90) days prior to their site visit. The notice should indicate the deadline of sixty (60) days for receipt of third-party comments in the Commission office and should stipulate that signed or unsigned comments will be accepted, that names and/or signatures will be removed from comments prior to forwarding them to the program, and that comments must pertain only to the standards for the particular program or policies and procedures used in the Commission’s accreditation process. The announcement may include language to indicate that a copy of the appropriate accreditation standards and/or the Commission’s policy on third-party comments may be obtained by contacting the Commission by calling 1-312-440-4653 or by email.
All comments submitted must pertain only to the standards relative to the particular program being reviewed or policies and procedures used in the accreditation process. Comments will be screened by Commission staff for relevancy. Signed or unsigned comments will be considered. For comments not relevant to these issues, the individual will be notified that the comment is not related to accreditation and, where appropriate, referred to the appropriate agency.
All relevant comments will have names and/or signatures removed and will then be referred to the program at least fifty (50) days prior to the site visit for review and response. A written response from the program should be provided to the Commission office and the visiting committee fifteen (15) days prior to the site visit. Adjustments may be necessary in the site visit schedule to allow discussion of comments with proper personnel. Negative comments received after the established deadline of sixty (60) days prior to the site visit will be handled as a complaint. Any unresolved issues related to the program’s compliance with the accreditation standards will be reviewed by the visiting committee while on-site.
Programs with the status of initial accreditation, and programs seeking initial accreditation must solicit comment through appropriate notification of communities of interest and the public such as faculty, students, program administrators, dental-related organizations, patients, and consumers utilizing the procedures noted above.
On occasion, programs may be scheduled for special focused or special comprehensive site visits and because of the urgency of the visit, solicitation of third-party comments within the ninety (90) day time-frame may not be possible. However, third party comments must be solicited at the time the program is notified of the Commission’s planned site visit, typically sixty (60) days in advance of the visit. In this case, the timeframe for solicitation of third-party comments will be shortened. The notice should indicate the deadline of thirty (30) days for receipt of third-party comments in the Commission office and should stipulate that signed or unsigned comments will be accepted, that names and/or signatures will be removed from comments prior to forwarding them to the program, and that comments must pertain only to the standards for the particular program or policies and procedures used in the Commission’s accreditation process. All relevant comments will have names and/or signatures removed and will then be referred to the program at least twenty (20) days prior to the site visit for review and response. A written response from the program should be provided to the Commission office and the visiting committee ten (10) days prior to the site visit. Adjustments may be necessary in the site visit schedule to allow discussion of comments with proper personnel. Any unresolved issues related to the program’s compliance with the accreditation standards will be reviewed by the visiting committee while on-site. Negative comments received after the established deadline of thirty (30) days prior to the site visit will be handled as a complaint.
Individuals who are interested in submitting third party comments, may contact the Commission office for submission guidance. Third party comments should be emailed to the appropriate Commission staff; comments should not be sent to the Commission office via the US Postal Service.
60-DAY DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF COMMENTS IN THE COMMISSION OFFICE. Please email comments to the appropriate CODA staff. Staff emails are found at: https://coda.ada.org/about-coda/coda-staff
“As a new single mom of three children, I knew it was time to make a change and to be able to provide for my kids. I always wanted to get into the dental field, but I just wasn’t sure when or how to get started. I met with advisors at Ivy Tech Columbus. They gave me the courage and support to enroll back in college. I wasn’t sure I was going to get through, but my professors and counselors at Ivy Tech pushed me through. I was on the Dean’s List each semester! I can’t thank Ivy Tech enough for believing in me and supporting me through to graduation. ”
–Amanda N. | 2020 Grad, CDA, EFDA
“This program is so much more to me than just higher education. The faculty always had an open-door policy; you could call or text them and they would get back to you. They were always on your side, and they always smiled. This program taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to. I am beyond grateful for this program and all the staff I have met along the way.”
