Lead Abatement Worker (Refresher)

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

Lead Abatement Workers play a critical role in safely removing or controlling lead-based paint hazards in target housing and child-occupied facilities. To remain licensed or certified, workers must complete periodic refresher training that keeps them up-to-date with evolving safety practices and regulatory requirements. This EPA-approved course, delivered under the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), fulfills those renewal requirements.

This refresher course provides:

  • Updates to federal, state, and local regulations affecting lead abatement work
  • Reviews of key information from the initial Lead Abatement Worker course
  • Current best practices for safe LBP removal, containment, and cleanup
  • Opportunities to discuss real-world challenges with other LBP professionals

Participants must pass the refresher exam with a minimum score of 70% to receive a renewal certificate. Most states do not require retaking the third-party state exam for recertification.

Course acceptance:

  • Indiana and Illinois (all EMI courses accepted except the Worker Initial course)
  • EPA approval, which meets requirements for: Florida, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming

Renewal timelines vary by state:

  • Illinois: License renewed annually; refresher required every 3 years
  • Indiana: Training and license renewed every 3 years; Indiana allows up to 12 months grace for training and 6 months for licensing
  • EPA-only states: Training renewed every 3 years (no state license required)

Late renewal may require retaking the initial Lead Abatement Worker course. Staying current ensures workers remain eligible to perform abatement legally and safely.

Upon successful completion of the Lead Abatement Worker Refresher, participants will be able to:

Demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Updates to federal, state, and local regulations related to lead-based paint abatement
  • Updated techniques and safe work practices for performing LBP abatement activities

Hands-on skill review includes:

  • Reinforcing essential abatement, containment, and cleanup techniques

A recertification exam will be administered at the end of the course.

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link.
