This course is designed to teach a broad range of topics for various welding processes, emphasizing Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) advanced issues. The participant will also learn practical welding and cutting techniques with Oxy-fuels. Topical areas of study include safety, blueprint and welding symbols, welding joints, welding defects, metal identification and properties, welding procedure specifications, and finally, welding careers and necessary qualifications. MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate electric and oxyfuel welding equipment safety.
- Learn the basic welding joints.
- Identify heat input and metal distortion.
- Describe the capabilities of electric welding equipment.
- Weld with both AC and DC.
- Metal preparation and tacking.
- Making single and multi-pass welds.
- Weld in flat and horizontal positions.
- Identify SMAW electrodes and AWS electrode classifications.
- Understand DC reverse polarity
- Understand proper electrode manipulation for each type of electrode.
- Understand the correct technique for each welding position and electrode type using 6011, 7014, and 7018 electrodes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of blueprints with attention to signs, symbols, abbreviations and specifications.
- Ability to identify various lines, views, projections found on prints and interpret various location dimensions, external/internal threads, surface finish symbols and welding symbols.
