AWS Gas Metal Arch Welding (GMAW) Certification Preparation

This hands-on training course prepares students for certification in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), equipping them with the technical skills and safety knowledge required for successful careers in welding. Participants will learn to operate constant voltage and wire feed welding equipment, perform welds using both short circuit and spray transfer methods, and work with flux-core tubular wires. The course emphasizes routine equipment maintenance, proper use of shielding gases, and mastery of five basic joint types. Students will apply American Welding Society (AWS) standards and terminology while executing welds in a variety of positions and techniques on mild steel. Available as open enrollment for individuals or as customized contract training for employers looking to certify or upskill their workforce.

  • Apply proper safety procedures and protocols specific to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).

  • Describe the principles of constant voltage and wire feed welding processes.

  • Operate GMAW equipment using both short circuit and spray transfer methods with hard wire.

  • Perform welds using flux-core tubular wires.

  • Identify and correctly use shielding gases associated with GMAW.

  • Conduct routine maintenance on GMAW equipment to ensure safe and effective operation.

  • Identify and execute welds on five basic joint types: butt, lap, tee, corner, and edge.

  • Demonstrate smooth and consistent weld restarts using short circuiting transfer on mild steel.

  • Perform square groove welds in vertical up, vertical down, and overhead positions.

  • Complete lap and tee joint welds using spray transfer on thick mild steel in flat and horizontal positions.

  • Execute V-groove welds using spray transfer on thick mild steel in the flat position.

  • Use proper AWS welding terms and definitions in both practical and theoretical applications.
